Great Questions Asked
by Great Patients

As committed as we are to knowledge and education, we love questions, and our patients ask some great ones! We include them here in the hope that you might find the answers you need to your own questions and concerns.

Q. Does the flu shot cause the flu?

A. No. The viruses in the flu shot are killed (inactivated), so you cannot get the flu from a flu shot. The risk of a flu shot causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small. Almost all people who get influenza vaccine have no serious problems from it.

Q. I heard on the news that Avandia causes heart attacks, should I stop taking this medication?

A. Some studies suggest that Avandia does increase the risk of heart attacks, but there is no proof. Don’t jump to conclusions based on these studies. I would suggest you talk to your doctor about Avandia to see if the risks outweigh the benefits.

Q. I like to drink grapefruit juice. My friend told me it could possibly interact with my medications, does it?

A. Grapefruit juice contains a chemical that interferes with the enzymes in your gut that break down various drugs in the digestive system. The result of the interaction can be high levels of these drugs in the blood and lead to serious side effects. Just 8oz of juice or 1 grapefruit is enough to cause the interaction. Talk to your pharmacist to see if you should avoid grapefruit juice with your medications.
